UNal boosts Agro-nutrition safety in the Province of Cundinamarca

Bogotá D. C., feb. 11 de 2013 - Agencia de Noticias UN- The Agro-industrial Technological Corridor of the region emerges from concern due to the poor nutritional conditions, especially in child population of Bogotá and the Province.
Nutrition in Bogotá and the Province of Cundinamarca is not appropriate in calories or nutrients. There are calorie and protein deficiencies at every social level in the urban and rural areas. As determined by the results of a recent National Survey on Nutritional Situation in Colombia (ENSIN), shows that the maternal-child population has grave food access problems.
Prevalence of chronic malnutrition in boys and girls between 0 and 4 years of age is 16.4% in Bogotá and 13.1% in Cundinamarca. Similarly global malnutrition is 2.9% en Bogotá and 2.5% en Cundinamarca. These figures illustrate the poor nutritional condition and life quality of   children in these regions.
UNal, SENA, CORPOICA, the Office of Secretary of Economic Development of Bogotá and the Office of the Secretary of Science, Technology and Innovation of Cundinamarca have joined forces to strengthen the new stage of the Agro-industrial Technological Corridor (CTA, for its Spanish acronym) agreement, which was signed in 2012.
During the first CTA stage, research activities were focused on horticulture, flower plantations, herbs, flowers, foliage, dairy, bio-cosmetics, biopharmaceuticals, as well as in the raw material, agricultural machinery and packaging sectors.
“The effort has been successful as we have achieved the objectives and obtained relevant results. Several agencies have joined efforts to develop the second stage of the project and not focus as much on agro-industry but on agro-nutritional safety in the Bogotá-Cundinamarca region”, says Mauricio Tovar, UNal Extension Director and project University representative.
The Management and Decision Collegiate Body (OCAD, for its Spanish acronym) of the Science and Technology Agency of the General Royalties System approved $Col16 billion for Bogotá and $Col18.707 for Cundinamarca.
“The main benefit for the community is that through science and technology the production capabilities of small producers will become stronger in order to face the challenges of the Free Trade Agreement”, he said.
